To start off the conversation with a short statement, BlacKkKlansman is an excellent film, and stands alongside works like Malcom X and Do the Right Thing! as some of Spike Lee’s best work. To that end, BlacKkKlansman is often one of the more frustrating pieces of art to come out this year, this is, of course intentional on the part of Spike Lee. One of the biggest questions you may often find yourself asking is why the movie isn’t funny. While the inherent ridiculousness of the concept and investigation is enough to garner laughs from time to time, given its absurdity it should easily snatch up more than it does. The realization as to why will slowly sneak up on you throughout the film, the outlandish circumstances of the film and the vitriolic hatred the KKK members have of other races (particularly of black and Jewish people) isn’t funny because it’s too real. Often in a film it’s easy to divorce the racism of period pieces from the actuality of the circumstances. BlacKkKlansman demands you look at it, and never shies away from letting you know that to this day, nothing has changed.

IT SEEMS UNFAIR FOR MOST ADULTS TO EVEN BEGIN TO HAVE OPINIONS ON A MOVIE TARGETED TOWARDS CHILDREN. SURE THE MOVIE MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY PEOPLE IN THEIR 20’S AND 30’S, BUT IF YOU’RE NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE IT’S TOUGH TO MAKE A JUDGMENT CALL ON WHETHER OR NOT SOMETHING IS GOOD OR BAD.
